On June 26, 1996, during the NBA Draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected Kobe Bryant with the 13th overall pick, straight out of Lower Merion High School in Philadelphia.
However, Bryant’s time with the Hornets was brief. The team had already agreed to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for veteran center Vlade Divac. This pre-arranged deal was orchestrated by the Lakers’ then-General Manager, Jerry West, who recognized Bryant’s immense potential.
The trade became official on July 11, 1996, marking the beginning of Bryant’s legendary career with the Lakers. Over the next two decades, Bryant became one of the most iconic players in basketball history. Known as the “Black Mamba,” he led the Lakers to five championships.
On January 26, 2020, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others tragically died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, while en route to Gianna’s basketball game. Though Kobe Bryant passed away, his legacy endures.
